EVENING LIGHT - BY STEPHEN LYMAN
"Treasures from the wilderness comes with seeds for the future. A nest that once hatched new life: baby birds. Feathers that flew through the sky a Hog Scraper which burned countless candles." - Stephen Lyman. Night fell as I looked out the window - watching as the mountain's light faded into aplenglow. A reflection of may face appeared in the glass. In my mind, the window took the shape of a painting. I started mentally collecting symbols of nature and lining them on the sill. That was the beginning of Evening Light. Since I was painting a lot of fire scenes at the time I decided a candle would be a perfect choice for the window especially because we were making our own beeswax candles to burn at every meal. Now all I needed was the perfect candle holder so I visited an antique store and the following occured. S.L. - do you have any old fashioned candlestick holdres? Dealer - Yes, we have a crusty one over there. It was used in the Idaho mines in the mid to late 1800's. They called it a hog scraper because its sharp edge was used to scrape the hair off pig skin. S.L. - how much? Dealer - $30 dollars. S.L. - for an old piece of tin? Dealer - It's very rare. Part of history. S.L. - I'll give you $20 Dealer - I'll take $25. S.L. - ok but it better scrape the ol' pigskin smoother than greased piece of masonite.
